A recent national champion, months after winning that title, had on its roster a center who was kicked off his high school team after being investigated for sexual assault. That team also had a shooting guard who would be investigated for marijuana possession, a point guard cited for underage drinking, a backup point guard who confronted an opposing coach during a game and a backup center accused of beating up his girlfriend. Plus it had (gasp) a transfer from another school.
Can you imagine any other coach using that line on a recruit?
Perhaps even more shocking is that K has used this line once before to describe a player. On page 10 of his book 5 point play he describes Chris Duhon:
'...Shows great concern for his teammates; even though he could be a star, he wants their respect, love, and friendship. When he looks into your eyes, he's almost angelic.'
"Coach K has never in his life reacted in the way he reacted to DeMarcus," said DeMarcus' father Ron Nelson in a May 30 article in the Vallejo Times-Herald. "They said he went home and told his wife he finally found someone he fell in love with on sight."
Scared Yet? Keep in mind that this is only what's printed.. Who knows what else K has said over the years?
update Dec. 1st, 2003:
In this interview, Demarcus was actually asked about angel eyes! Here is his response:
I think you are referring to something that Coach K said about my eyes. It was like my eyes were innocent. He made that comment the first time we met. It was like I was very attentive & he was talking about my stance & the way I was looking at him eye to eye & my eyes followed him around wherever he went.
